Sadie is on its way to my doorstep. I’m so WAY excited (pardon my grammar, I have five kids). Anyway, I thought I’d tell you a little more about my book before it hits the shelves.
I never sat down with the intention of writing a book. In fact—and I probably shouldn’t admit this—I hated English class growing up. Loathed it. Detested it. Faked sick to avoid it. Reading. Writing. All of it. I blame my English teachers, which really isn’t fair, but considering how much I love both reading and writing now, I think something in the educational system is flawed. The more likely story is that I am flawed, since there are plenty of people out there who love English. But even growing up when people would ask about my dad (a well-known LDS author), they would ask me, “So, do you like to write, too?” I would shake my head firmly and say, “No. Nope. Just him.” –and if you’re wondering who my dad is, my maiden name is Lund. That’s your only hint. 🙂
So like I said, I never intended to write Sadie. I’m just a daydreamer. I’ve had stories living in my head since I was little. This particular one had just had been stuck in my head for a long time—a year or so—and I thought that maybe if I wrote down the gist, it would then leave. Hahahahaha. The story is still stuck in my head. More like imbedded. I can quote over half of Sadie line for line, and that’s only because I made recent revisions to the rest. But one simple 5:30am morning, when my baby decided he was done sleeping. That’s all it took to make me a writing addict.
Part of that addiction was fueled by the fact that I could write about so many things that I love: snow-capped mountains, quick-witted humor, Spanish, music—specifically Classical piano, my religion, warm and cozy cabins, Star Trek (yes, I’m a Trekkie and proud of it), and the power of family and friends to affect us all. Writing became a conglomeration of everything me. It was/is so awesome!
However, some things I don’t particularly enjoy slipped into Sadie, too, like skiing, snowboarding, marshmallows, diamond necklaces, Lucky Charms, and really cold weather. Not that there’s anything wrong with those things. Plenty of people love them (except maybe the frigid temps), they just aren’t my thing. In fact, I’m not really even sure how they slipped into the story. I guess when authors say stories have a mind of their own, I understand now.
Anyway, Sadie should be on the shelves around Thanksgiving, which means I’m under a month. 3 ½ years since that 5:30am start and it’s less than a month away!
(Picture me jumping up and down here).
